How to Keep Your Air Conditioner Running Well Through the Fall

Cooling

Your air conditioner has had a lot of work to do this summer and we still have more heat on its way. Just because the date on the calendar has moved over to fall doesn’t mean you’re done with your AC for the season. Staying on top of annual AC maintenance, while also following a handful of other tricks, can help you maintain your air conditioner while keeping your home comfy too.

Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit

Debris can accumulate around your outside unit, specifically during the fall. When the time arrives to rake up the leaves in your yard, at least rake up the leaves and debris around your air conditioner. Debris can hinder air flow, causing your system to work harder and wear down faster. We want your air conditioner to last as long as it can.

Raise the Temperature on Your Thermostat

Set your thermostat at the highest temperature you can while still being comfortable. Whenever possible, take advantage of additional cooling methods such as fans. The lower you set your thermostat, the harder your system will have to work to attain that temperature. You may think switching off your system completely will save on energy and help your system, but that just creates more ground for it to make up when you switch it back on. It will have to work harder for a longer amount of time, which is another contributing factor that could lead to untimely system failure.
